Fill up plant pots

Zanarkand
Zanarkandstarted grow question 1mo ago
I mounded the soil around the stems of my plants to give them extra support, which creates a small hill in the center of the pot. Now I’m thinking about filling up the rest of the pot with soil to level it out. Is that a good idea? And what type of soil would be best for it?

Just make sure it's airy and not a mulch. The ceramic/plastic pot will already make oxygen a scarse commodity in that medium, so so often oxygen is overlooked but it its not readily available in a medium it will limit all other process especially at night when root respiration is a must. The top couple inches of a medium that gets blasted by light will be subject to evaporation, as moisture is drawn from top 4-5 inches as an example during cycle the damper soil below will soak up into the dryer soil like a sponge, so over time it acts like wick almost. If you had airpots and you found your pots to be drying out a little faster per cycle then I'd say add mulch but because your using ceramics with limited air you wanna do what you can to support evaporation. Tranpiration is daytime process of pulling water from pot but plant can only pull from where it has roots, this will account for 90% of water used during the day. Until your wee plant is bigger you are at the mercy of evaporation. Photosynthesis is driven by light and temp. But rate at which photosynthesis is driven is by the rate at which stomatal condutance, can perform gas exchange. Photosynthesis provides the gasoline for the car. The water cycle, transpiration and stomatal conductance are the gears ⚙️ in the car. Doesn't matter how much gas you fill her up with if the water not cycling to match the demand of photosynthesis. Sorry to ramble on, but understanding this concept I found to be far more important to understand and improve my growing skills than any the 95% of beginner guides that focus on ppfd and temps. ;) it's a good idea. Jist wait till she is a little bigger first, adding more right now will jist put roots further put of reach of limited oxygen. Doubt it would change much drastically.tho. Good luckkkkk

Yep, that’s a solid move, filling the rest of the pot helps stabilize the plant, retain moisture, and promote more root growth from the buried stem. Just use the same soil mix you used originally (or as close as possible) so the drainage and nutrient profile stay balanced. Good luck and happy growing 👊👍

Doing so won't hurt anything, in fact you will end up with more roots, don't go above your cod leaves but, YES, add more soil if you like, it can help with both root and strength.

mounding is certainly a thing you can do with cannabis, i'd tend to agree with below in that you should not require mounding but sometimes a lanky girl can need it. just make sure it is preemptive, not a corrective mounding as it will likely be too late to remediate an issue by mounding; if you want the full effect you could even go appropriately south of a node and scrap some tissue off the stem and apply some hormone if you want to speed up rooting north of the original soil level literally any type of soil - it aint that deep; maybe a nice coco layer for mulch but whatever floats your boat

To prevent the girl from growing tall with a thin stem, just move the light about 50cm above the plant. This way the stem will be strong and sturdy and the plant will not reach for the light on a thin stem, so it will distribute its energy evenly throughout the plant and stem. If you just pile the soil in the middle around the stem, or add it all over the pot, you will end up with the same result - the girl will still reach for the light, the stem will still be thin, only the girl will be a little taller and you will no longer have the opportunity to add soil. All this is for indoor growing. If you grow outdoors, add substrate, be sure to aerate it - as already mentioned here, using coconut fiber or perlite. In the sun, the girl will cope on her own, the stem will definitely get stronger. You just need to ensure enough light, an aerated substrate and not overwatering.

Yes you can do that. And mix some perlite to help drain Walter better.
