Sadly, convenience is king here. The amount of time and hassle saved makes feminized a better choice for me. Plant enough, cull the weak, i doubt it's much different than a batch of regs. I plant 200% of what i intend to grow, so the slow and defective don't make it to the 1-gallons. Then, another 3-4 are killed off before the final pot-up.
If i could grow outside, it would be different. I wouldn't need all of the very large outdoor plants to be female to have a year's supply. Save a lot of electricity too.
Keeping mother plants is a pita i don't enjoy.
If i had 500-700 USD to waste on a used thermocycler and accompanying single-use lab-bits and solutions, i'd do my own gender testing at home... Anyone want to buy a 20T rosin press or a couple 650w high efficacy lights? If I could recoup previously wasted outlays, i could justify it. Heck, business opportunity. Labs charge ~20 a plant i think?
