you alter apical dominance by changing what is the highest node on the plant. the highest node, relative to gravity, will always get the most resources. leveling out the apical meristem (main trunk) will spread out resources, too. it's good to have a few nodes before bending anything over. it can cause a stall or seemingly cause a stall in growth but really it's just slower growth spread out over all the level nodes -- both happen... sometimes tough to tell difference. i've even seen funky leaves grow after LST. It won't do anything for branches below the bend. use it as a tool to manipulate the plant into the shape and size you want. know the cause and effect... each plant's genetics as far as axillary growth is different... some easily bush out, others do not. topping does something similar - it breaks apical dominance temporarily... causes growth hormones to spread below, which will cause more spread out axillary growth for a bit. Something will gain dominance if you don't also train it a bit after topping. simply bending dominant branch down will cause teh plant to focus elsewhere... once it evens out, you let that previously larger branch up to an even height with the rest. i would sugget for a smaller plant that topping is maybe easier. you can get 2-4 primary colas with little effort and easy to even them out as they grow. A tall lanky genetic that doesn't branch out easily may be better to LST -- but a bit more extreme than what you did... bending it parallel, possibly removing any downward facing foliage -- i always like dto bend it between the axillary growth so each can grow vertically, but in hindsight you got so much extra growth it may be better to allow 1 side to dominate and cut off the low side... less effort contorting to grow vertically and you usually have more than you need anywy, so it just saves a little pruning of congestion later on. if i don't want a messy bush, i thnk it's easier to create an organized structure using topping and some mild LST to level out canopy afterward. if i want more than 4 primary colas per plant, i top more than 1 time. i skip a node when topping a 2nd time - something i learned in a nursery a long time ago.. not sure if it applies to all plants or not. so i top... it grows out.. i count 1 node, then top again above the next. -- make 8-12 shoots as a base.. even it out over time as it grows with bending/training. there are lots of ways to achieve same ends... but not alll ways are as efficient... work backward from space filled to determine how many colas you want, then per plant value, then devise a plan to get there... refine this process and you'll increase yield per sq foot as you get better at filling the space. if you notice you cut off a lot of extra growth, look to see if you can avoid it with a change in process. systematic may be boring, but fastest way to improve.
