In a weeks time(when my stretch is over)I will defoliate a few fan leaves covering colas. So... how much should I cut, fan leaves higher or lower on the stem and what effect will this have on growth and yield? does time of day or time in the watering cycle of the cutting matter?

Think of defoliation as a last resort. First try to LST to open up the canopy and/or tuck leaves. Now when defoliating, what you want to expose is not buds (or stems), is lower leaves that are connected to those lower buds. When selecting what leaves to defoliate, be sure there are other leaves below to catch the light it was receiving and that on the point where it join a branch / stem there's smaller leaves that will continue to catch light to feed said node. If you've never done it, do a couple of leaves each time, or you might get carried away and leave a bald plant.

Hi there! What a lovely plant! You should tuck all the big fan leaves that are making shades onto lower buds. Lower leaves don't need to be removed since they're not 'hiding' anything from the light, and small leaves onto bud sites should be kept until harvest. About watering & cutting best time, I'd recommend to do it right before night, because plants recover during the dark phases. I'll be around, keep us up-to-date and good luck with this beauty!
