Aloe vera is ideal as a rooting powder alternative because it contains glucomannans, amino acids, sterols, and vitamins. Studies show that these help many types of species develop more and stronger roots when growing cuttings or propagating via air layering.
Other substances that can be used as rooting hormone alternatives include:
Aloe vera gel
Cinnamon powder
Honey
Cow dung
Willow juice
Apple cider vinegar
Indole-3-butyric acid (IBA): The active ingredient in Clonex, IBA is a plant hormone that promotes root growth. The concentration of IBA varies by color of the gel:
Green: 1.5 g/L IBA
Purple: 3.0 g/L IBA
Red: 8.0 g/L IBA
Anti-fungal agents: Protect cuttings from fungal and microbial infections
Vitamins and minerals: Provide nutrients for new roots
2-Hydroxyethyl cellulose: A viscosifier
Indole-3-butyric acid (IBA) is found in many plant species, including:
Maize: IBA has been isolated from the leaves and seeds of maize. It can be biosynthesized in maize from IAA and other compounds.
Pea: IBA has been identified in pea plants.
Arabidopsis: IBA is naturally present in Arabidopsis thaliana, a model plant used in genetic studies.
Willow: IBA can be extracted from plants in the Salix (Willow) genus.
to prepare IBA 2000 ppm solution? Weigh 1g of IBA powder and dissolve it in 50ml of Methanol or Ethyl alcohol. Make the volume up to 500ml with water. Store the solution in colored bottle, as it is sensitive to light.
Personally I'd mix my own with Aloe vera/water.
