Don't do things whimsically.
Have a plan. How many colas do you want per square foot? Work backward from that.
I'd suggest aiming for 3 colas per sq ft and if the math is funky, round up liberally. e.g. 3.2? go with 4, primarily because it's easier to creat 4 even colas than 3.
The other suggestion -- have some axilary growth (some development of branches) before topping. Topping with tiny nubs for branches doesn't seem as beneficial, but i could be wrong on that. The initial dissribution of growth below where yo top is temporary, and apical dominance will quickly dictate where the most growth occrs. I'd rather get a boost to lower growth with branches that can benefit from it. Growth isn't linear. So, a temporary speed up for the lower branches is probably more beneficial when there is some existing growth already developing.
"they" say to not top before you get 6-7 nodes of growth. This tends to correlate with decent axial growth, too. You can top before that, but possibly more risk of shocking plant? I've never had a problem topping earlier but i rarely top before this point anymore, regardless. Better safe than sorry.
anecodte:
I want 8 colas per plant. I top above 3rd node and typically cut off 1.5-2 nodes. So i guess i do cut it a bit early.
I want 4 of those initial branches to remain and i cut off the lowest that originate at the cotyledons. In my experience these lowest branches suck a big fat dick. Your mileage may vary (YMMV).
After that i let them grow horizontally along my trellis net until they get close to the position i want them to be in. At which point i top a 2nd time so, I now have 8 branches that can grow vertically and they are well-positions to grow where i want them to grow vertically.
Once they clear the trellis, i prune off any axial growth below the trellis. I will remove leaves if they are very close to medium, but otherwise keep as many leaves as possible. You can cut off a branch without cutting off the leaf at its base. If i leave any behind, it is to take clones. Depending on timing and height i may lollipop further down the line, but that depends on how it grows and what the rest of my canopy is doing.
Keep the leaves!!! lol. When you got abig bushy plant, you can remove more around the bottom if you want better airflow at pot-level.
The point? Have a plan. It may not be a great plan your first time, but you can improve it. Make this stuff systematic so you don't have to fret over it each grow cycle.
Assuming some common sense, your yield is more about the square footage of the plant's canopy than a shit ton of colas. Overcrowding doesn't improve yield. I find ~3 colas per sq ft gives me nicely sized nugs but not so large i worry about rot or other infections. You'll get much better nugs deeper into canopy by not overcrowding, too.
More is not better in this regard. there is a happy zone in the middle. Some phenos may need more colas per sq ft to maximize yield, but these are the shitty phenos anyway, lol. The ones that will form tiny buds and regardless will be a lower yielding outcome. Avoiding an over-crowded canopy also reduces effort. LEss pruning to avoid congestion etc. Shouldn't have to prune for good light penetration. That's a sign of over-crowding.
To keep yourself honest, shoot for 50g/sq ft.. this will help you refine your strategey over time. If you get clones of heavy yielders, shoot for 70g/sq ft as a target. Falling short is not a problem early on... it's just telling you to refine your methods... Also consider any shitty phenotypes in the canopy and herms you throw out etc. Can't hit the lower 50g/sq ft when you throw out 1/4th of canopy... base numbers on 3/4th the area at that point.
