First Scrog attempt - How much defoliation?

Jelly
Jellystarted grow question 2 years ago
I put a Scrog net in and over two days defoliated most of the leaves and small stems below the screen, also took out just a few leaves from the canopy that were obviously shadowing bud sites. Should I be thinning the canopy even more?

Looking good! The canopy looks great, just keep an eye out for leaves covering bud sites and you'll be golden. Getting the trellis net height right was an interesting journey for me. I found, contrary to popular belief, that you want your net as close to the pot as possible. I shoot for 6" so it easy for me to get my hands and forearms under it if I need to. I wish I would've known this when I was doing my outside scrog, but you know what they say about hindsight. There's a guy on YouTube called The Northern Scrogger. I recommend checking him out. Also, here's a link to my outdoor scrog. You might find something in there that will help you out: growdiaries.com/diaries/148865-grow-journal-by-ernesttwwg If you're new here, please select the answer that helped you the most by clicking on the "answer" button underneath what the person said. I hope this helps!

I would say that all comments below have very valid points. Personally I would lift the net a bit more and not do any more defoliation as you have done enough. Later on in the grow you may need to remove the odd leaf. Leaves that aren't shading the plant you ideally want to leave on, these are usually the one on the edges of the plant. Your plant does look good and I hope the rest of the grow goes well.

That’s a style thing. The point of scrog is to get mor bud from the area. So the lower the net, the less “thinning.” Also the less defoliation- the more airflow you will need. So again, up to you—. I like what I see there, but get them fans going! ✌️💚🌿💨

You done it at a good time, think of each little leaf as a solar panel. Each leaf produces say 1 point to the total amount of energy produced per day. If you collect 500 points each day you can distribute those 500 at night. If you defoliate 300 leaves your plant will now only be able to collect 200 points per day. This your plants total capacity will drop. Once a leaf costs more energy points to maintain than energy it produces it will defoliate itself. All we are doing is helping the plant accelerate this process. You have just switched to flower. The plant was 100% devoted to the stretch and preparing hormones for flower. All defoliation must be done before the switch to flower and adequate time given to recover. Once switched to flowering you essentially start a cycle countdown. May not be much noticable difference but I find from experience it's better to watch and see how a plant defoliates itself then you will be better equipped to understand when and why. Plants look super healthy and symmetrical well done. Good luck ahead.

okay man I'm just wondering why the scrod net is there to be honest. usually we put them in during veg so that we can guide the growth underneath the net and make full use of the grow room. your net is really low at the moment so I would suggest raising it and starting to spread out your branches by tucking them under dude. really hope this helps
