Introduction - Week 08 Summary - Ensign's log, stardate 100887.53, Growth is continuing to ramp up! Early in the week, the greenhouse was removed. Now both plants are under the exact same environmental conditions. With both plants now transpiring into the same grow space, the RH has been a lot more stable. Also trying 'Grow Dots' from 'Real Growers!' Top dressed around each grow bag and mixed it into the top soil. Mid-week, gave each of the girls their first defoliation. Glad to say that they both quickly bounced back and by the end of the week, they have fully recovered and are continuing to bush out! Plan to top water next week with some fertilizer. One more week of 18/6 veg to go before the big flip to 12/12 bloom! Steady as she grows Ensign. Engage! 🖖 [START OF WEEK 08] ========================================================== WEEK 08 - Full Veg Wk3 04/10/23 → 04/16/23 This Week's Estimated Goals ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- DLI: 32 mol/m2/d PPFD: 500 μmol/m2/s VPD: 0.5-1.0 kPa This Week's Meter Readings & Averages ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- DLI: 29.81 mol/m2/d PPFD: 460 μmol/m2/s VPD: 0.98 kPa Soil %: [20.6, 28.4, 31.7, 27.3] ========================================================== Day 01 - Monday - 04/10/23 - Total Days: 056 ----------------------------------- Daily Averages - Temps: 76.4°F [24.7°C] - Humidity: 69.9% - VPD: 0.91 kPa - Soil %: [20, 28, 31, 28] ----------------------------------- - [09:17]: Morning check up! --- EB1 is just bushing out! --- Can barely see EB2, but she looks okay too. Will check under the greenhouse tonight. --- Refilled the humidifier with distilled water and Hydrogen Peroxide (~20mL). --- Did not spray the greenhouse. - [+00:45]: Late night check up and humidifier refill! --- Nice! Both girls are looking pretty damn good! --- EB1 is just filling up the tent! --- Both are looking great! --- Did not spray the greenhouse. --- Refilled the humidifier with distilled water and Hydrogen Peroxide (~20mL). - [+01:07]: Did a bit of leaf tucking to expose more top sites. --- Mainly tucked the huge fan leaves. --- Wow! --- EB1 already has about 6 to 7 tops growing in! --- Plan to start defoliation later in the week. Day 02 - Tuesday - 04/11/23 - Total Days: 057 ----------------------------------- Daily Averages - Temps: 77°F [25.0°C] - Humidity: 67.2% - VPD: 1.01 kPa - Soil %: [20, 28, 32, 27] ----------------------------------- - [09:43]: Quick morning check up! --- Looking good! --- Since the tent's RH has been a lot more stable, decided to remove the greenhouse. --- EB1 has been transpiring enough humidity to keep the tent at a stable 65-70% RH so adding EB2 should help stabilize the RH even more. --- Refilled the humidifier with distilled water and Hydrogen Peroxide (~20mL). - [16:04]: Evening checkup! --- Wow! Both girls are growing larger, but EB1 is clearly dominating! --- EB2 is also showing signs of additional top sites growing in. Nice! - [16:11]: Okay! Trying a new product! --- Shout out the DGC! --- Gonna give 'Grow Dots' by 'Real Growers' a go! --- Woah! The dots kinda look like nerds candy or ice cream dots. Pretty cool! Now I understand why they're called dots. --- Anyways! --- I'm also currently using 'Recharge' with noticeable growth. Huge difference from my last grow so stoked to give these dots a try. --- Going to top dress a bit into the top soil. --- Made a basic wetting solution. Also going to add in a bit of Recharge. - [16:29]: Filled a measuring cup with 1/2cup of distilled water. --- Added 1/64tsp of: ------ Quillaja Saponaria Extract [60] ------ Recharge --- Mixed the solution and poured it straight into a spray bottle. --- Okay! Time to top dress! - [16:39]: Rotated the EarthBoxes 90 degrees clockwise. --- EarthBox2 is now facing the front. --- Gently peeled back the mulch cover. --- Sprinkled 1.5tsp of Grow Dots onto the top soil around the grow bag. --- Using my fingers, I gently worked the dots into the top soil. --- Misted the top soil with 0.25cup of the wetting solution. --- Gently replaced the mulch cover. - [16:59]: Rotated the EarthBoxes 180 degrees. Now EB2 is now facing the front. --- Repeated the same process for EB2. --- Worked the dots into the top soil and sprayed the area with rest of the solution. - [17:18]: Rotated the EarthBoxes 90 degrees counter-clockwise. --- Now both fill tubes are facing the front. --- Checked down each tube and both reservoirs were nice and dry. Nice! --- Decided to bottom water. - [17:20]: Filled a pitcher with 3 cups of distilled water. --- Poured the water straight into EB2's fill tube. --- Repeated the same process for EB1. --- Rotated the EarthBoxes back to the default configuration. - [17:30]: Misted the top growth for both plants with a bit of distilled water. --- Did not refill the humidifier. The tank was still pretty full so will check tomorrow morning. --- Done! --- Growth is all around looking pretty good! --- Plan to defoliate either tomorrow or Thursday. Will take PPFD readings as well. Day 03 - Wednesday - 04/12/23 - Total Days: 058 ----------------------------------- Daily Averages - Temps: 77.2°F [25.1°C] - Humidity: 69.5% - VPD: 0.95 kPa - Soil %: [22, 30, 33, 26] ----------------------------------- - [09:23]: Quick morning check and refill! --- Both girls have obvious signs of growth! --- EB1 has clearly started growing beyond the sides of EarthBox. Nice! --- Refilled the humidifier with distilled water and Hydrogen Peroxide (~20mL). - [+00:55]: Late night check and humidifier refill! --- Good evening my girls! --- Ooowee! --- Looking great! --- EB1 is continuing to bush out! She definitely needs a defoliation soon. --- EB2 is a bit lagging, but also growing along nicely! Although her leaves are more lime in color. --- Refilled the humidifier with distilled water and Hydrogen Peroxide (~20mL). Day 04 - Thursday - 04/13/23 - Total Days: 059 ----------------------------------- Daily Averages - Temps: 77.5°F [25.3°C] - Humidity: 68.3% - VPD: 1.00 kPa - Soil %: [21, 29, 33, 27] ----------------------------------- - [09:54]: Morning my queens! --- Aye looking good girls! --- Damn EB1 is getting huge! --- Refilled the humidifier with distilled water and Hydrogen Peroxide (~20mL). --- Plan to defoliate tonight! - [16:55]: Evening checkup! --- Wow! Just incredible! --- Stoked on the growth for both! --- EB1 is continuing to dominate the tent! - [17:07]: Took PPFD readings. --- EB1 was around 460 μmol/m2/s which gives a DLI of 29.81 mol/m2/d --- EB2 was around 437 μmol/m2/s which gives a DLI of 28.32 mol/m2/d --- Going to leave the PPFD alone. - [17:17]: Checked the Ecowitt soil moisture sensor data: --- 21% - [CH01 EB1 - grow bag] --- 29% - [CH02 EB1] --- 33% - [CH03 EB2 - grow bag] --- 27% - [CH04 EB2] --- Soil moisture is drier around EB1's grow bag. EB2 seems to be at a higher level than the back. --- Now for the basic meter. - [17:21]: Using the soil moisture probe, took readings for each EarthBox. --- Soil moisture levels for EB1 was at 8 out of 10 --- Top soil looked a bit dry. --- Soil moisture levels for EB2 was at 10 out of 10 --- Top soil is looking pretty hydrated. - [17:31]: Rotated both EarthBoxes 180 degrees. --- Checked the fill tube for each EarthBox. --- Both fill tubes were pretty dry. --- With the current soil moisture levels, decided not water anything. --- Rotated the EarthBoxes 90 degrees counter-clockwise. - [17:38]: Time for the first defoliation! --- Starting with EB1, --- Using a set of trimmers, I carefully trimmed off the larger fan leaves. --- Also removed some of the lower nodal growth too. --- All the trimmings easily filled a solo cup with leaves. --- Tucked the trimmings under the mulch cover. - [18:17]: Did the same for EB2. --- Did not trim as much as EB1, but opened up the canopy a bit more by removing the larger fan leaves. --- Wow! --- Stem rubs of the trim for EB2 is pretty damn loud! Can smell a definite diesel-like profile. Very nice! --- Rotated the EarthBoxes back to the default configuration. - [18:49]: Misted both plants with distilled water. --- Plan to do height and distance checks at the end of the week. --- Refilled the humidifier with distilled water and Hydrogen Peroxide (~20mL). Day 05 - Friday - 04/14/23 - Total Days: 060 ----------------------------------- Daily Averages - Temps: 77.5°F [25.3°C] - Humidity: 68.6% - VPD: 0.98 kPa - Soil %: [21, 28, 32, 27] ----------------------------------- - [09:23]: Quick morning check and refill! --- Looking good girls! --- A bit droopy, but this is expected after a defoliation. Growth will perk up again in a few days. --- Refilled the humidifier with distilled water and Hydrogen Peroxide (~20mL). --- Plan to bottom water tonight! - [23:59]: Late night checkup and humidifier refill! --- Aye nice! --- Ladies are looking pretty fine! --- Top growth for both are now perky again! Can see multiple top sites for both plants. --- But wow EB1 is continuing to crush it! --- Refilled the humidifier with distilled water and Hydrogen Peroxide (~20mL). --- Before bottom watering, - [+00:27]: Checked the Ecowitt soil moisture sensor data: --- 21% - [CH01 EB1 - grow bag] --- 28% - [CH02 EB1] --- 32% - [CH03 EB2 - grow bag] --- 27% - [CH04 EB2] --- Soil moisture is continuing to dry around EB1's grow bag. EB2 is also drying up too, but is pretty moi. --- Was planning on bottom watering, but based on the current levels, will hold off for another day or so. Day 06 - Saturday - 04/15/23 - Total Days: 061 ----------------------------------- Daily Averages - Temps: 77.7°F [25.4°C] - Humidity: 68.6% - VPD: 1.00 kPa - Soil %: [20, 28, 31, 28] ----------------------------------- - [07:12]: Quick morning check up and humidifier refill! --- Wow! Definite signs of growth! --- EB1's growth is just incredible! - [22:44]: Took end of week height readings. --- EB1 is about 18" tall. --- EB2 is about 15" tall. --- EB1 was about 12.25" away from the grow light. --- EB2 was about 15.5" away from the grow light. --- Both are getting a bit close to the light. Plan to raise it up soon. - [23:04]: Rotated the EarthBoxes 180 degrees. --- Checked both fill tubes. --- EB1 was dry! --- EB2 was almost dry. There was still a bit of water. - [23:15]: Checked the Ecowitt soil moisture sensor data: --- 20% - [CH01 EB1 - grow bag] --- 28% - [CH02 EB1] --- 30% - [CH03 EB2 - grow bag] --- 28% - [CH04 EB2] --- EB1 is getting drier. She's about the same soil moisture level as last week. --- EB2 is 10% more hydrated than EB1 --- Based on moisture levels, decided to not water anything. - [23:33]: Rotated the EarthBoxes back to the default configuration. --- Refilled the humidifier with distilled water and Hydrogen Peroxide (~20mL). --- Wow! --- Both have shown considerable growth over the week! On-wards to the next! [END OF WEEK 08]

Great diary! Love the info. I too use earthboxes and Build a Soil nutrients. I noticed your Ecowitt moisture meter data is at 19-25%. My earthbox without the reservoir filled is reading 40-42%. If you use your fingers to test the area, are you finding the soil moist one inch below the surface? Just curious! Good luck with your grow, you are using the best of the best and I followed you to watch your progress!

@Ensign420, All great questions... I would wait until the moisture drops after top drench to fill the reservoir. I look to see if the reservoir is dry and if so, will fill reservoir a few days after last top drench. I use rainwater. I found that RO and distilled water contain absolutely nothing for plants. I noticed my plants really like rainwater. So, I set up a rain barrel to harvest water. Rainwater is near neutral PH with little or no particulates. I measured it as low as 5 ppm. Much better than the wasteful RO water. I do use distilled water for my humidifiers to reduce the white calcium/sodium dust that is caused by using tap water. Tap water is fine if you have decent water without too much sodium. I usually do not add additives to the reservoir, preferring a soil drench technique if adding anything. I have added Yah Whey to the reservoir with spectacular results, but much reduced dosage, say one ounce for entire reservoir, but very infrequently. I never PH my water. Microbes take care of all that for me, for which I am profoundly grateful. I would not use a wetting agent for the reservoir at all, just for top drench when you want to add additives such as BuildABloom which I highly recommend as a bloom booster, top drench that onto the soil. Nor would I add Mycrobe complete. I worry a lot about anaerobic bacteria in the reservoir as there is little aeration that occurs in the reservoir proper, so I try to keep it clean. Hope this helps. Great questions!

@MarcGrows, Nice! Out of all of my EarthBox grows, still have yet to fully fill the reservoir. But plan to give it a try soon. Just finished top watering today (reservoir is currently dry): - The larger plant is at 31% with the soil being at 44% - The smaller plant is at 33% with the soil being at 35% Since I just top watered today, guess I should wait a few days before filling the reservoirs right? Also wondering, when you're filling the reservoir all the way with 2-3gal, do you use tap water or distilled water? Do you add any additives to the reservoir water (Yah-Whey, Quillaja, Mycrobe Complete, etc)? Do you pH the water?

@Ensign420, my results with the earthbox have been spectacular in the past, and I really do nothing, that's why I love using them. I top drench for the first 4-5 weeks until roots have developed long enough to drink the water in the reservoir. When I do fill the reservoir, I fill it completely until water escapes from the overflow. Usually, 2-3 gallons. I then watch the water level until it is dry from viewing the fill tube. I usually wait one or two days before refilling the empty reservoir again. After initially filling the reservoir, I then top water only for a feeding such as BuildABloom or ferments. I wait to soil drench when the reservoir is empty. I do not have to feed her a lot as I top dress shortly after she drinks the entire reservoir for pre-flower feeding. I usually cut out ferments in flower. Currently, my Ecowitt moisture is at 53% with water in the reservoir. I have not customized the MULT_CH Soil settings. No need to apologize! We use the earthbox for simplicity in our busy lives. I also re-amended my soil before the grow. One of the ingredients I have never used before to re-amend is basalt. Known for its mineralization and paramagnetic energy, it could be why my moisture meter states a higher percentage. It sure conditioned my media making it fluffy, providing a texture I never experienced before.

Excellent detail. I just bought the Apogee MQ-610 ePar that measures up to 730nm. I should've spent the money on that a long time ago. My lights were too close last season.
