October 11, 2023 Day 36 This week will focus on LST and watering. I need to start paying more attention to the water consumption as they are starting to get thirsty. Another week or so and I'll need to start cleaning them up. Everyone got a nutrient reservoir today. Strawberry Gorilla: These two are looking quite good. Both are just entering pre-flower now. Number 1 is now growing flat naturally. I couldn't be happier with this one. Number 2 is still a bit small. But I expect her to take off like the others will any day now. Although she is the smallest, she has the best colors. Deep lush green. I pulled a single leave from her as well. Gorilla Cookies: These 2 look great. Number 1 is growing beautifully. If not a little at an an angle, but still looks great. Not to mention the stretch hasn't really started yet so it should level out in that time. Number 2 seems to be ignoring the accidental topping. Everything is growing as it should be... I think... I honestly cannot tell. She doesn't seem to be falling behind at all. If anything, she is starting to get a bit bigger than her sister. With this nutrient watering, I hope the leaves finally get a nice green color. If not grow leaves that are a lush green. Speaking of leaves, all of these plants are super healthy and have 5, 7 and 9 finger fan leaves. Even the auxiliary branches are growing 7 and 9 finger leaves. Specs: Height: 10" Water: Full DLI: 41 mol/mΒ²/d Grow System Environment: Temp: 75.7Β° RH: 60.9% VPD: 1.16 kPa October 12, 2023 Absolutely nothing going on today. Pictures and some observations. Strawberry Gorilla: Number 1 looks amazing. She is stretching completely level. I'll pull down some of the taller branches over the next couple days. Number 2 looks good. Just growing. Not as perfect as her sister plant, but close to it. She does have an angled canopy. But it's getting much better as she grows. Gorilla Cookies: Number 1 looks great! She is the furthest along and shows it. However, I am struggling a bit with leveling the canopy. The top is just too stiff and I cannot bend it down. I may try tomorrow when it's a bit taller and thinner. Update: I think I discovered the issue I was running into. Magnesium Deficiency. I thought I was fixing it, but I was using nowhere near enough. So today, I did a half gallon of 3 ml and top fed all 4 plants evenly. If I'm right, I should start seeing darker greens and I believe faster growth. Grow System Environment: Temp: 77.1Β° RH: 61.4% VPD: 1.20 kPa October 13, 2023 Happy Friday the 13th! This tent is getting filled out pretty quickly and it's only day 3 in the week. Next week everyone will be in flower and I can really watch the stretch and have a great time! I think I need to start thinking about trimming up the ladies to give them each a bit more space to grow unhindered. I'll have to ask that today. The canopy, as expected, is completely level like a tabletop. I'm calling it a tabletop canopy. Don't know if that's a real thing, but it is now. No watering today. Strawberry Gorilla: Number 1 is looking fantastic. Her canopy is staying level and growing evenly. Her colors are fantastic and she is super healthy. No training or anything today. Number 2 had 1 main fan leaf snipped off today. Not only was it covering 2 branches and about 5 auxiliary branches, it was also overshadowing a couple branches of Number 1. So away it went. I also pulled her toward the outer corner of the tent to open up more space while she grows. She's still the smallest, but she will still get big. So I moved her back a bit. Gorilla Cookies: Number 1 is having a grand ole time growing in her back corner. She's nearly in full flower now and looking great! No training, no snipping. Just left her alone for the day. Perfectly level canopy now. A couple of auxiliary branch stragglers, but I'm not worried about them. Number 2 is also looking good her new leaves are darker and healthier looking than the yellowing ones. I guess the Cal/Mag worked, or is working. Not sure if she's out of the woods yet. However, her topping is all done healing and I think she will take off in earnest now. She may even start pre-flower soon. I don't think I'll be doing anymore training on these ladies until the stretch really starts to happen and there is an actual need. I think I will be pruning and defoliating to keep space open under the canopy, but also to ensure each plant has a bit of space for itself. My goal is for the plants to hit around 30" maybe 36". No higher though. That would cause issues with lighting. So I intend to keep the plants short for now. But as of this moment, they are still around 10" tall. Maybe a bit taller, but the stretch really hasn't started yet. So I can expect these plants to double if not triple in size as I've witnessed in other grow diaries. Update: I did a quick DLI check and found it to be too high at 47 mol/mΒ²/d so I dropped the intensity down from 80% to 70%. That should do it. Grow System Environment: Temp: 75.9Β° RH: 62.5% VPD: 1.12 kPa October 14, 2023 Everyone got a little bit of training and some defoliation today. Not a lot, just opening up some branches and clearing out the undergrowth. I also rotated the plants to leave some open space in the center canopy for more unhindered growth. That way, the walls of the tent will be filled in first and the center of the canopy will develop last and should keep up with the rest of the canopy. The light is brightest there so I expect faster growth. Strawberry Gorilla: Number 1 has by far the best structure of all four. Her branches are reaching, she's completely level and is super healthy. Very nice green. Beautiful leaves. Bud sites popping up everywhere. She did get a few leaves cut and some branches pulled down. Number 2 is still a bit smaller, but she is definitely starting to stretch. She had a few leaves cut today and also needed a bit of a training. Looking great! Gorilla Cookies: Number 1 was accidentally almost topped. I duct taped her back together though and it looks like she is none the wiser. Her colors are kinda like number 2 with the weird fading. I think it's a magnesium deficiency. This is used soil after all. So I upped the Cal/Mag dose up to 1.25 ml/l. That should do the trick. The new growth looks great too, so I'm guessing problem resolved. Number 2 seems to be recovered from the topping and magnesium deficiency. She had a few branches tied down and some leaves clipped. Everything looks good with her. She's definitely filling out and starting to spread her branches wide. Grow System Environment: Temp: 76.8Β° RH: 62.9% VPD: 1.14 kPa October 15, 2023 No training today. All 4 will get a reservoir refill though with full nutrients. I've read that a reservoir for wicking and other hydroponics should not be left to empty. Although, I don't really think it's so much to do with wicking. Maybe it does as the wicks only take what the plant wants. I dunno. Either way, they are all getting refills today. I should ask about that. Strawberry Gorilla: These 2 are looking fantastic. Number 1 has a perfect canopy and some beautiful branching. The stretch is definitely happening. I really need some stretch from her so I can put the lower fan under the canopy. I just need to height and to clean up the lower foliage. Number 2 will also need the stretch and clean up as will the other two. She's looking great! Getting bigger and great color. She is nearly in full swing flower now, while Number 1 is still in pre-flower. It looks like they stretched about 2" last night. Maybe 1.5". Either way, they are starting to take off. Gorilla Cookies: Number 1 seems to have recovered remarkably. She even stretched the top a bit too fast for my liking. The problem now is that the top can't be bent anymore. So I cannot control the canopy totally. I was thinking about releasing the branches to catch up with the top, but then that would overtake the other plants and ruin my canopy. Can't have than now can we. Maybe in a day or 2 I'll be able to slightly bend the very top just to slow down the growth there. However, she is filling out quite nicely. Not as well as number 2, but still filling out. Number 2 on the other hand is now turned into a beautiful plant. She has a neat perfect canopy and finally some beautiful color. Her branches are sticking out all over now and the leaf coverage is nearly spot on. She may need some leaves cut in the next week. More to clean up the lower foliage, but also some of the larger top leaves... When they get larger. Overall, this plant is now as healthy and overall as perfect as Strawberry Gorilla 1. I'm expecting big bud from this one. Massive cookie colas. Delicious. Update: After careful consideration, I decided to take a second look at the canopy and decided a few leaves needed to go. Both Strawberry Gorilla 2 and Gorilla Cookies 2 both got a light defoliation. A couple of the lower branches that weren't going to make it got pruned. For now that is. I'll have a better idea in the weeks to come. I also reevaluated Gorilla Cookies 1 and tested the flexibility of the top. Happily it was very pliable. So I bent it inward toward the break point. I did the same thing with another nearly topped Gorilla Cookies in my Overflow Tent. It absolutely worked. However, that was over a week ago. Plenty of time to heal before flowering. This one on the other hand is in nearly full swing flower. Maybe a couple more days and the flowering stretch should be underway in earnest. Anyway, this should technically work. We shall see. The biggest issue here is that the top and some of the top branches are standing straight up and I cannot pull the branches down as they are too close to the break. So I'll have to wait. But maybe, the tie down will do the trick. We shall see. Update Number 2: I ended up doing a light defoliation on all four plants. Since one really needed it, the other three needed it as well. So now I have somewhat defoliated plants. I feel like I did a pretty good job. Grow System Environment: Temp: 76.0Β° RH: 63.6% VPD: 1.09 kPa October 16, 2023 Not much at all today. Just watching them stretch for now. Strawberry Gorilla: Number 1 had a few leaves popped off. Just one spot that was a bit overcrowded. All fixed. Number 2 is doing fine. Although, I do worry a bit about her stature and size. Kind of runty who knows she may pick up the pace in the coming weeks. Gorilla Cookies: Number 1 is now annoying me. That damned top should have slowed down. Nope. That shit sped up growth. Wtf. So now I have this plant with growing branches, but the top is starting to tower over everything. I did pull 8t back down some, but the issue is how tall it is in the first place. Also, I have some concerns about 3 fingered leaves that I found in some of the shorter auxiliary branches. Last time this happened, I ended up harvesting airy light buds. But that was a lighting issue. This time, lighting is spot on. So I'm not really sure what to do here. Just keep pulling that top down until the rest of the plant catches up. Number 2 looks great! Her branches are spreading out and all nice and level. She took perfectly to her defoliation. As well as the rest of the group. Her leaves are absolutely beautiful now. I've also managed to get rid of all those faded leaves to perfection for the plant health. I really can't wait to see what she gives me at harvest time. Grow System Environment: Temp: 74.7Β° RH: 59.8% VPD: 1.15 kPa October 17, 2023 This is the last day of the Veg stage according to Gorilla Cookies 2. She has finally entered pre-flower. She is going to be big. No watering today. I'd guess around 1/4 gallon in a day? I e also increased the light intensity back to 80% it's now near perfect for the stage these ladies are in. With such, I expect even more growth. I'm honestly not a fan of the short bushy plants. They are much harder to work with. Taller and slightly stretchy is more comfortable. Strawberry Gorilla: Number 1 is looking really good except the fact that she has 3 finger fan leaves and I don't know why. Lighting is fantastic, nutes are spot on, defoliation wasn't too stressful, if at all. I don't understand what is going on. Number 2 is still a bit small, but she's coming along. She does not have 3 finger fan leaves. Just 5 finger. Gorilla Cookies: Number 1 is starting to get annoying. The top and surrounding side branches are all twice as tall as the rest of the plant. They have buds growing while the rest of the plant still looks to be in pre-flower. Weird. I wonder what is happening. Even with the near topping, she has no intention of stopping this type of growth. I can only hope the rest catches up. Or it's gonna be a weird grow. Number 2 is wonderful. She has 7 and 5 finger fan leaves. She is finally in pre-flower and will be in the flowering stage in about 5 days. Maybe a bit earlier. Grow System Environment: Temp: 73.7Β° RH: 62.0% VPD: 1.06 kPa

lokos to be a fiar amount of perlite in your soil. overwatering is easy to avoid with simple good habits when watering. water until entire pot is wet. a little runoff ensures this, but not always necessary. wait for top 1" to dry and repeat. how often you fertilize depends on several factors and preferences. the more often you fertilize the less concentrated it sould be, and vice versa for longer periods of time between fertilization. so, if it is ever droopy after these types of irrigation habits, it's the drainagae quality of your substrate that is the cause of any droopiness or water-related issues. 50/50 is a good mix of perlite to soil. stick in that range and you should never see 'overwatering' while stickign to the above standard operating procedure. if you swithc to coco, only need 30% perlite (or similar drainage amendment) if you stick to those ratios fo substrate:drainage amendment, it is impossible to overwater. you might over or under fertilize, but it won't be from too much or too little watering. don't ever tell your self "it's all the same" because it isnt each plant is different gentics and potential different reaction to whatever is in the soil... that soil is not 100% homogenous either. always observe and react... cause and effect... feeling it's all the same is irrelevant and tends to interject personal biases into diagnosing problems. regardless, something specific is happening to the plant you observed looking odd. that's all that matters.. identifying and reacting properly. allow a bit more development before transplant for a rootball that is more robust. when you distrub the rootball that is usually the cause of any transplant shock.. not watering it.. you should always water after a transplant to help settle the substrate around it.. make sure you don't have to fill in any chasms if the form. time your transplants as best you can so it isn't 2 irrigations with very little time between. you don't want it to be as dry as a typical wet-dry cycle, so that the substrate will hold together better with enough moisture in it. deviating 1 time from that normal wet-dry cycle (waiting for top 1" to dry before next), is not the end of the world. but don't make a habit of it. also, in a small seedling tray or starter cup etc, you want to irrigate a bit sooner than 1" deep. in general it's anon issue, because by teh time you have to irrigate a recently planted seed, it's got a tap root all the way to bottom of small starter pots. allowing top to dry reduces risks of pathogens and pests. it keeps a good o2 ratio in soil for roots. it promotes deper roots vs superficial roots that are less effective. this simple method of irrigating provides numerous benefits. remember, you don't pick the volume of water needed... that is a recipe for fucking up substrate equilibrium. feel weight of pot when it is time to irrigate. this can be used as a trigger too. If you water at same weight loss, it requires the same volume of water as before. so, you can dial it in and reduce wasted water.

Autos do have a short life span and I noticed my plants lower leaves did this when I saw nothing else wrong with them. I plucked the leaves and continued watching and checking runoff ppms and ph. I grew in coco so ph wasn't my issue I was worried about ppms. Always follow the 10-20% water runoff rule. And make sure they are not 300ppm or more above your input ppms or your over feeding. Or 200ppms or more "less" then your input ppms. Or your under feeding. Environment plays a role so Google a good vpd chart, I use pulse vpd chart. Make sire your in the correct zone for your current stage of growth! I see nothing wrong but lower leaves dying off due to short life span, although a runoff check will tell you if you're deficient or toxic and then we can go from there! Please consider me as the answer to the question so I have a chance to win grower of the month contest πŸ™ please and thank you 😊

My 2x2 is starting to crowd. This is driving the RH to over 70%. Should I defoliate to help with crowding and RH? Or should I just leave it alone? RH in lung room is 48% Exhaust fan, high or low with a dehumidifier, doesn't work. What should I do? Defoliate? Thanks! Check diary.

Defoliation can certainly help. Less leaves = less transpiration. Are you keeping your soil really wet? If so water less. Lowering the space temperature will slow down the transpiration rate and will decrease humidity. Not sure what you are using for extraction fan, but it might be wise to just run it constantly, or get a bigger fan that can move that humidity out quickly and keep it in check. Keeping the tent open will certainly lower the humidity, but you'll waste light and release all of the environment. So to recap, Defoliate 50% of your leaves, yes Lower environment temperature (decreases transpiration rate) Don't saturate your soil or leave any water laying around (a big full root zone needs saturation, but if your plants go 4 or more days without watering then reduce your water volume) Invest in a bigger extraction fan

I'm using the AC Infinity SELF-WATERING FABRIC POT BASE. I don't top feed, so does anyone know if I should let the reservoir dry out? Or, because it's a form of hydroponics, do I make sure to keep water in there all the times? Also, should I keep the nutrients constant? Thanks!

In a bottom-feed watering system like the AC Infinity SELF-WATERING FABRIC POT BASE, it's generally beneficial to maintain a consistent moisture level rather than letting the reservoir completely dry out. Here's why: Continuous Moisture: Plants often prefer consistent moisture, and allowing the reservoir to dry out completely may stress the plants. Consistent moisture ensures that plants have access to water and nutrients when needed. Hydroponic-Like System: While it's not a traditional hydroponic system, bottom-feed systems share some characteristics. Maintaining a consistent water level helps provide stability in nutrient availability to the plants. Preventing Stress: Allowing the reservoir to dry out completely can lead to stress for the plants. Inconsistent watering can result in fluctuations in nutrient availability, potentially impacting plant health and growth. Nutrient Consistency: Keeping nutrient levels relatively consistent is advisable. Fluctuations in nutrient concentration can lead to nutrient imbalances, affecting plant development. Regularly monitoring and adjusting nutrient levels based on plant growth stages is a good practice. While maintaining a consistent moisture level is generally beneficial, it's crucial not to overwater. Overwatering can lead to oxygen deprivation in the root zone, potentially causing root issues. Finding the right balance and adjusting based on the specific needs of your plants is key to a successful bottom-feed watering system. Regularly monitoring plant health, nutrient levels, and moisture content will guide your watering practices.

The feeding system your running is probably more efficient on the smaller containers. Add to it the roots have to push to find water then it would be easier in the smaller container. Thus meaning the smaller ones found water first and had a easier time. If I had to guess the bigger ones will catch up, and surpass the smaller ones. Although this is my assumption, I'm not accounting for the phenos. Every strain has multiple phenos. You may plant 10 seeds and have 10 different looking plants. Better breeders get this dialed in, and the phenos are less sporadic. 10 seeds might give you 2 or 3 phenos instead of 10.. Now. With this said I would guess it's the smaller containers allowed the plants to have a steady supply of nutes quicker, if it's not a odd pehno... if so the bigger potted ones should catch up and surpass the little ones. Goodluck. Please consider selecting me as the answer so I can be entered for a chance to win grower of the month contest I would really appreciate your support growmie πŸ˜ƒ πŸ™

Lower 3rd is a general rule of thumb. I find the best practise is to keep your plant profile low through trellis nets and scrogging them (Screen of Green). I don't understand why people waste time and energy growing a plant 4 feet tall just to have to butcher the lower 3rd to half of the plant. Why did you waste the time and nutrients is what i ask myself? Why not trellis your plant and fill the net 3/4 with tops, then flip to 12/12, and tuck the first week, then allow everything to stretch up, then defoliate and watch your yield be epic, with little plant wasted.

In regards to a grow question about bottom feeding, I wanted to explain what I know and what I don't know about the bottom feed wicking system I have specifically with autoflowers. For starters the system works best when the 1 gallon reservoir needs to be refilled every couple of days or less. This is usually at the start of flowering when the roots have reached the bottom of the fabric container. No need to worry about the standing water. It'll be gone before anything has a chance to populate it. As for an autoflowers early life, I believe there is a difference here with photos and autos. Photos are generally in veg longer than autos, which means top feeding is a very short venture with autos. I have found that 14 to 20 days of top watering is sufficient. But not a full watering. Just enough to make sure the young plant gets what it needs. The final top watering before the bottom feed is about 1 gallon to 1.5 gallons. This is in both 3 and 5 gallon fabric containers with living soil and not coco. That could be different. It could also be a bit later or earlier based on what the plant wants. As for the bottom watering system, I prime the containers around week 3 by filling the reservoir with a half gallon of water and letting it soak into the soil. It takes about 20 minutes, but works well in the end. By doing this, the water from the bottom will meet up with the watering from the early top feed and by the time they connect the plant is ready for the wicking system. It's like prep work. As for what to expect during the grow, your roots will grow into the wicks. When this happens, I don't recommend lifting the plant from its base. This is where the fill up comes into play. I like to use a one gallon water jug to fill the reservoir. If I had a spout, I think it would be easier. Nothing pressured. Pour the water slowly to help with spillage. I also mix the nutrients right in the water jug. Makes it easier to fill up with an exact gallon. I haven't had much of an issue with salt build up, but I only use a 1/4 to a half dose. I wondered if I should let it dry out, but no. Instead, I use a lower dose of constant nutrients and keep the reservoir from drying out. Clean it every couple weeks and it should be good. A little trick I thought of in hindsight. Cut your wicks a little bit longer so you can make a loose knot to hold them in place. Make sure they are long enough to touch bottom. If I think of anything else I'll add it too. Any questions, please ask.

So this is what AC Infinity says about their Bottom Feed Wicking System. Please refill the basin whenever the water meter reads empty. It is recommended to clean and refill the basin every two weeks to prevent unwanted buildup and further protect against interlocking roots and wick lines. It's best to keep an eye on the meter for the low water reads.

Prilyfe13
@nonick123, I agree totally. The SCROG is just a backup. Training definitely helps with branch strength. But too heavy buds would be good too.
