if you top an auto, you should top it sooner than later.... it's a bad idea if the growth can't have time to be relevant as a cola... takes a little guesswork as to how much time you have left to grow.
less is more in a condensed schedule. i'd pick my places -- maybe just the dominant branches in an effort to even the canopy out, but before they get to that "sweet-spot" zone of bud growth of future canopy. as long as you consider the time left, you should make good choices. what's going to grow after you cut it? is it worth it?
