Hey everyone! So to start with just a bit of background on my experience level and my spaces- I am a new grower with a perpetual set up. I’m not sure exactly what number grow to count this, I have plants in all stages of the aforementioned perpetual grow… so I want to say second, but what I can say for sure- is that this will be my first time with feminized photoperiod seeds- the only other photo I have grown thus far was a regular g44 bag seed and everything else I’ve grown or have going currently are autos. As far as space, I have 2- I have an under stairs closet that I converted as well as an ac infinity tent, both are 3x3 spaces and although somewhat limiting space wise, I did this so that as I upgraded lights and such, it would be fit either space interchangeably.
Quite similar to what I am always hearing- as we see the walls of prohibition falling down all around us, the anticipation of our state becoming legal was inevitably right around the corner and as soon as I saw that green light, the rest was history and out of what I thought was going to be just a hobby, a new passion was born. The pros of growing your own are too long to list but the saving money aspect won my wife over (which was the ultimate green light I had to wait for 😅 haha)
As I said, I quickly became passionate and as I constantly hear about others doing, I too immediately dove head first down all the rabbit holes my mind could handle and started trying to take in any info I could find whether it be through YouTube, podcasts (which get me through EVERY workday), books, audiobooks and guides I was trying to be a sponge.
In my travels I stumbled upon a breeder that I had listened to on multiple podcasts and was quite intrigued by their knowledge, accessibility (as far as answering any questions and customer service- this breeder is solid and approachable) and last but not least, drool worthy offerings 🤤- I was also very into the fact that geographically speaking we are from the same general neck of the woods so not only was I shopping local(ish) but also would imagine that his strains would do well where I am as we are in the same climate zone. At the time it was predicative breeding and they recently had undergone a name change and are now Pure Breeding. From what I understand New England rock candy is their flagship strain and I settled on the rock candy cake!
I received the seeds promptly and basically as soon as I had them in my possession they were burning a serious hole in my pocket and I was dying to plant them- as I said earlier, I am very confined space wise and as I am growing a perpetual I have a few plants in various stages of growth- I ended up pulling the one photo that I had running which was taking up a whole tent and then moved a few things around left it like that for like two days and couldn’t take it anymore and decided to plant just one in this little cubby area that I have in the closet (it will be a tight fit but I justified it in my head as my last photo took quite a long time and many trainings to get the canopy to the size that I had it- so hopefully this will take just enough time for the others to be taken down and harvested to make more room for the rock candy cake! We’ll see if I was correct in thinking this or if it was just a rookie mistake..🤷♂️🏻)
Seeing as how this is what I would consider my second grow, I haven’t developed “my style” of growing And rather him trying different things and comparing the outcome trying to find out what works best for me and my situation-
That being said, to germinate, I have decided to use peat pellets. I have a couple plants that I started in those with 100% success but considering I can count the number of plants that I’ve started out that way with both hands 👐🏻 It’s hard to decipher whether that speaks to the efficacy of that method or just beginners luck- regardless, no paper towel method or seed soaking this round.
As far as growing media I plan on using a 70/30 mix of coco and perlite which I have a few plants in right now and I really like it, MINUS the frequency of fertigation I don’t currently have an automated set up- truth be told I’ve started collecting some of the components and got the hydro halos and all that but I’ve been on the fence because I feel like I move my plants around a lot for that kind of set up as nice as it’d be.
Nutrient wise I am going granular for the first time with jacks 3-2-1. I have been using it for about two weeks so far, but this one I will run in jacks from start to finish so I can really get a more accurate feel of how it’s performing compared to what I was using previously rather than switch half way through and hope I notice a difference between the two- I am far too new for that and am just cutting my teeth still with all of this and wouldn’t claim otherwise.
Anyways to get these started I soaked that peat pellet in some water with a ph of 5.8 and then I flipped the peat pellet over to open up the bottom… I did this because the FIRST time I had used these pellets, they sprouted surprisingly fast and all was going great riiiiight up until I tore off EVERY SINGLE taproot of the 4 autos I had planted while trying to GENTLY remove that outer coating. 🤦♂️🏻 Trust me when I say I will NEVER (at least hopefully never) make that mistake again. Sooo I then just flipped it back over, sprinkled some mykos in there and placed the seed. I then gently pressed on the sides of the peat pellet just enough for the peat to cover the seed, placed it in the container, covered it with the dome and put it in this cubby area in the closet where it will stay until it sprouts and is strong enough for me to transplant.
Grower love and much more to come!🤙
