Should I start defoliating some of the leaves around the bottom which aren't getting much light?

Yes, If your plant starts getting so bushy that no light is making it down to the floor through the plant, it's time to “clean” the bottom of the plant. First start by removing any tiny growth tips on the lower part of stems that will never be able to reach the light anyway.

This is so weird practice, but I’m doing that every time. Not sure how the leaves even on the bottom can “not get enough light” in a grow tent with a very high light reflection until they become oriented almost vertically pointing to the floor which doesn’t mean overwatering but searching for more light. The benefits of doing this is creating a better posture for further transition into flowering. It helps avoid popcorn buds and save space for better air circulation, probably reducing overall yield in exchange for better quality buds.

Let the young shoots run towards the sun and you'll get a more even canopy height ^^ The first defoliation takes place a little before flowering. So unless you're preparing for the flowering stage in the next few days, wait a while. However, you can start looking to see if you have any low branches that are a bit weak that you can cut.
