You'll find different schools of thought on that. some people swear by keeping them closed -- then you get the brownish looking weed. I'm not a fan at all of that, lol. I think it tastes like shit. So, getting some oxygen in there occasionally will keep it from going down that road.
Once RH is steady, you don't have to burp as often. That impacts the rate at which anything is evaporating off the buds. so its perceived effect on 'chlorophy gassing off' would already be consistent due to temps and RH remaining consistent. I don't know the exact chemical processes taking place but i also don't just assume shit. As far as moisture, if RH is consistent, then the evaporation of H2O is already evened out and at equilibrium.. mathematical certainty. do keep an eye on it to be certain it is at equilibrium (as much is evaporating from the buds as that which is condensing in the jar = equilibrium and consistent RH reading)
Light is by far the worst factor for longevity of weed. Keep it dark and cool. Air it out occasionaly to avoid the brown pound, imo.
if it only lasts 6-12 months. an enclosure with RH control that limits how much space is "air" vs buds is fine. You may have had jars 3/4th filled during initial drying, but fill'em up full and keep'em full for best storage.
vacuum sealing is a good idea for greater than 1 year storage. They also have little fancy contraptions that can replace atmosphere with nitrogen, which will eliminate need to burp a jar and prevent deterioration of the buds.
it'll turn brown due to anaerobic bacteria (low o2 conditions over time). O2 breaks down thc a bit but keeps it green. the nitrogen replacement avoids both problems. Limiting gas in the vacuum sealed bag makes them last a long time... may compress buds a bit.
I've used 5gallon buckets with gamma seal lids for a couple years now. Much better than burping 10-20 jars or more. Will hold 2-3 lbs depending on how you pack it. I have several strains so i use mesh bags (like for produce from supermarket with no fibers/threads to get stuck in buds and machine washable) to keep strains separate. This has worked well. After about 12 months i do notice the start of some issues, but only faintly. Still very smokeable. so, this length of time has very minimal needs to keep the buds in tip-top shape. Longer than 12 months may require more or willing to smoke increasingly lower quality buds as they age.
I'm looking into vacuum sealing 33% or so for the last 3 months leading up to my grow season - or whatever is necessary. I grow 2 cycles per year and have 6 months off, so i have to store a bit more than someone running cycles throughout entire year.
This works really well for others that i've known to make use of it. The low pressure environment is a concern but with no space, the increased evaporation low pressure causes has little to now effect from what i've seen from others. If i'm trying it this year i need to go buy a setup before May. otherwise.. "next year". the quality drop off isn't really worth too much investment relative to my length of storage.
