Introduction - Week 01 Summary - Ensign's log, stardate 100315.7, A pretty smooth week of growing! She sprouted early this week with droopy leaves but by mid week she was healthy and growth was ramping up. To help keep the top soil moist, been misting daily and using a humidity dome. Also been dialing in the tent's humidity all week. Been trying to keep RH closer to 70% with some success. Like with many aspects of growing, things can always be better. So just doing the best I can with what I got. Oh! Also swapped out the faulty AC unit with a new one. This should help with temps. Also disconnected the carbon filter from the exhaust fan (should have done this during the tent reset). Anyways, Onto the next week! Steady as she grows Ensign! Engage! 🖖 [START OF WEEK 01] ========================================================== WEEK 01 - Seedling [Pre-Veg] 09/19/22 → 09/25/22 This Week's Estimated Goals ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- DLI: 12 mol/m2/d PPFD: 185 μmol/m2/s VPD: 0.5-1.0 kPa This Week's Meter Readings & Averages ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- DLI: 11.47 mol/m2/d PPFD: 177 μmol/m2/s VPD: 1.2 kPa ========================================================== Day 01 - Monday - 09/19/22 - Total Days: 005 ----------------------------------- Daily Averages - Temps: 78.0°F [25.6°C] - Humidity: 60.1% - VPD: 1.28 kPa ----------------------------------- - [09:22]: Good morning! --- Wow! --- Nothing. --- Still too soon to see any growth, but should start to see something fairly soon. --- If properly planted, hope to see a sprout within 2-3 days. --- Conditions look pretty good so just going to leave everything alone for now. --- May mist the dome later tonight. - [09:14]: Good evening! --- Ooowee! --- She sprouted!!! --- There was a patch of raised rice hulls in the center of the grow bag. --- I gently brushed the excess hulls off of her to reveal a new seedling! --- Glad to see no sign of the seed shell. Also her cotyledon leaves are just uncurling. Utterly fascinating! --- Week 1 of growth has officially begun! --- Misted the cup with a bit of distilled water. --- She looks a bit weird, but once her leaves fully uncurl, I'm hoping to see some healthy green leaves. Day 02 - Tuesday - 09/20/22 - Total Days: 006 ----------------------------------- Daily Averages - Temps: 79.7°F [26.5°C] - Humidity: 65.1% - VPD: 1.18 kPa ----------------------------------- - [09:22]: Hello my beauty! --- Okay! --- Her cotyledon leaves have fully opened and her first set of true leaves are just starting to grow in! --- Upgraded the dome from a cup to a larger dome with a vent. --- To increase the humidity, I misted the interior of the dome. Vents fully closed. --- Hmm. Her first set of leaves do look a bit droopy, but no yellowing, so gonna keep going. --- If she ends up being stunted (Damnit Ensign), then I'll probably try to soak another bean on Thursday. - [09:28]: Refilled the humidifier. --- Also added a bit of Hydrogen Peroxide into the tank (~20mL). - [11:16]: Made slight adjustments to the tent's environment. --- The exhaust controller's temperature triggers are now set to 85°F/75°F [HIGH/LOW] with the MIN/MAX speeds set to 3/10. --- The heater and humidifier's controller target values are set to 76.0°F/70.0% [TEMP/RH] --- Increased the RH's target value. Hopefully the slightly lower exhaust speed will help to keep the humidity inside the tent a bit longer. --- The current paradox is maintaining adequate ventilation in the tent while keeping a humid environment. --- May lower the fan's speed even further or set the fan to an on/off schedule. - [16:09]: Evening check! --- The light just turned on so decided to do a check. --- Nice! She is definitely greening up. --- Her first set of true leaves are still looking a bit droopy, but her cotyledons were stretching up! --- Gonna spray the top soil with a bit of water. - [16:13]: Filled a measuring cup with 1/2 cup of distilled water. --- Added 1/64tsp of Quillaja Saponaria Extract --- Mixed the solution and poured it straight into a spray bottle. --- Misted the top soil of the EarthBox. --- Also misted the grow bag (sprayed a bit inside the air gap too). --- Used the entire 1/2cup of solution. --- Misted the dome with a bit of distilled water and placed it over the grow bag. Vents fully opened. --- So far so good! - [19:00]: Quick check! --- Soil still looks moist but the dome dry. --- Re-misted the dome with more distilled water and closed the vents. Day 03 - Wednesday - 09/21/22 - Total Days: 007 ----------------------------------- Daily Averages - Temps: 78.4°F [25.8°C] - Humidity: 57.6% - VPD: 1.37 kPa ----------------------------------- - [09:14]: Good morning! --- She's looking a bit taller with growth getting greener. Nice! --- Still a bit droopy but less than yesterday. --- Re-misted the dome with more distilled water. - [09:18]: Refilled the humidifier. --- Added a bit of Hydrogen Peroxide to the tank (~20mL). - [21:42]: Evening checkup! --- Very nice! --- Growth is starting to ramp up! --- Her first set of serrated leaves are looking less droopy and have started to get larger! --- Within a day or so, her leaves should be around the same size as her cotyledon leaves. --- She has also gotten a bit taller. --- Just incredible how fast these plants can grow! - [21:42]: Misted the top soil with a bit of water. --- Using a spray bottle, I gently misted the grow bag and surrounding EarthBox top soil. Just enough to wet the top surface of the soil. I also misted a little bit in between the air gap. --- Also misted the dome before placing back on (vents closed). --- Up until now, I was getting a bit worried and was considering a new seed soak. --- But growth is looking a lot better now so just going to continue on! Day 04 - Thursday - 09/22/22 - Total Days: 008 ----------------------------------- Daily Averages - Temps: 78.3°F [25.7°C] - Humidity: 63.7% - VPD: 1.17 kPa ----------------------------------- - [09:22]: Good morning beautiful! --- Nice! --- She is really starting to perk up! --- Misted the dome with more distilled water. - [12:05]: Time to change the AC unit! --- Swapping out my old unit (Honeywell MN1CFSWW8) to a Frigidaire FHPC102AC1. --- This slight downgrade in BTUs (from a 8000 to a 6500) should cut energy costs while still being able to keep the room a cool temperature. I hope. - [16:22]: Plant check! --- Sweet! Looking good girl! --- Misted the grow bag and surrounding soil. Just enough to wet the top soil. --- Also misted the dome with more distilled water (vents still closed). --- Depending on how this grow goes, I think this paper bag technique will be my preferred method for planting into reused living soil. - [23:31]: Late night check! --- Very nice! Her true leaves are now about the same size as her cotyledons. --- Looking nice and perky too! --- Did a height check and she was already measuring just under 1.5in! --- Did not need to take light readings. --- Since I did not adjust the light, the PPFD is still at around 177 μmol/m2/s --- This gives a DLI at 11.47 mol/m2/d --- Still going with the initial (week 0) DLI goal of 12 mol/m2/d --- She spouted from the soil on Monday, so going to wait at least a full week before increasing the light levels. --- Wow! --- So far this grow has gone surprisingly smooth (don't frack this up Ensign). --- Stay healthy little one! Day 05 - Friday - 09/23/22 - Total Days: 009 ----------------------------------- Daily Averages - Temps: 77.4°F [25.2°C] - Humidity: 63.1% - VPD: 1.15 kPa ----------------------------------- - [09:14]: Good morning! Quick checkup! --- Growing along nicely! --- Re-misted the dome with distilled water. --- Also refilled the humidifier. - [21:46]: Evening check! --- Nice! Growth is looking healthy and green! --- Her first set of leaves are already larger than her cotyledons! --- Can also start to see the next set of leaves growing in. --- Hyped! --- Decided to wet the top soil with a bit of distilled water. --- Using a spray bottle, I misted the grow bag and surrounding top soil with distilled water. --- Also misted the dome before placing it back on (vent is still closed). Day 06 - Saturday - 09/24/22 - Total Days: 010 ----------------------------------- Daily Averages - Temps: 77.8°F [25.4°C] - Humidity: 63.4% - VPD: 1.16 kPa ----------------------------------- - [07:16]: Morning little one! --- Growing along nicely! --- Refilled the humidifier. --- Also re-misted the dome with distilled water. - [20:04]: Night check! --- Nice! Growth is looking green and she looks perky! --- Similar to yesterday, I misted the grow bag and top soil with a bit of distilled water. --- Also misted the dome before placing it back on. - [21:56]: Decided to lower the exhaust fan's MIN speed. --- The exhaust controller's temperature triggers are still set to 85°F/75°F [HIGH/LOW] with the MIN/MAX speeds lowered to 2/10. --- The heater and humidifier's controller target values are unchanged at 76.0°F/70.0% [TEMP/RH] --- Hopefully this will help to keep stabilize the RH. - [21:59]: Oops! Forgot to disconnect the carbon filter from the exhaust fan. --- In past attempts, I had reset the tent from veg to veg (never made it to flower), but since the last grow was my first time through flower, this is my first time doing a flower to veg reset. --- In the early grow days, I learned the hard way that a carbon filter is not needed at all in veg and just wastes the filter. So time to disconnect the filter from the fan. Will try to remember to do this during the next flower to veg reset (damnit Ensign). --- All I had to do was removed the aluminum tape and disconnected the filter. --- Using a piece of carbon filter mesh (7"x8") and a few rubber bands I made a makeshift dust filter. --- Until the carbon filter is needed again, will simply leave it hanging in the tent. - [22:48]: Decided to cover the carbon filter's vent with some plastic wrap. --- While not in use, the plastic wrap should help keep any insects or dust from getting into the filter. --- Probably unnecessary and is mainly for my own peace of mind. Why not. Day 07 - Sunday - 09/25/22 - Total Days: 011 ----------------------------------- Daily Averages - Temps: 78.3°F [25.7°C] - Humidity: 66.5% - VPD: 1.08 kPa ----------------------------------- - [07:21]: Quick morning check! --- Growth looks nice and green! --- Did not re-mist the dome. --- Slightly lowered the exhaust fan's LOW temp trigger. --- The exhaust controller's temperature triggers are now set to 85°F/73°F [HIGH/LOW] with the MIN/MAX speeds still at 2/10. --- The heater and humidifier's controller target values are unchanged at 76.0°F/70.0% [TEMP/RH] - [20:03]: Evening check! --- Woah! Growth is looking pretty green and healthy! --- Gonna give the top soil another wetting! - [20:10]: Filled a measuring cup with 1/2cup of distilled water. --- Added 1/64tsp of Quillaja Saponaria Extract --- Added 1/32tsp of Great White --- Mixed the solution and poured the solution straight into a spray bottle and misted the entire solution onto the grow bag and the EarthBox's top soil. Tried to go as evenly as possible. --- Also misted the dome with more distilled water before placing it back (vents closed). - [20:24]: Refilled the humidifier. --- As with every refill, I added about 20mL of Hydrogen Peroxide to the tank. --- Wow! --- Another easy grow week! --- So far haven't really watered anything. Have just done a few top soil mistings. --- The EarthBox has about 8ft3 of soil, so volume-wise, I didn't really water much (considering the overall surface area and evaporation rate). --- Next week will be a DLI increase from 12 to 16 mol/m2/d --- Also a slightly higher VPD. --- Plan to do an IPM foliar spraying soon too (Tweetmint). Will probably do this right before removing the dome. [END OF WEEK 01]
