Introduction - Week 08 Summary - Ensign's log, stardate 100466.3, Well this week was pretty good! The week started off great with both seedlings sprouting up! There was a slight issue with one of the seedlings leaves not opening up, but that was fixed. Did a bit of vermicomposting and fed my worm bin. Glad to see that my wormies are still thriving! Also inoculated all the plants with a beneficial bacteria (BAS Beauveria Bassiana Plus). For the main grow, tried a bit of low-stress training by bending the main stalk over. Not sure if this was a good idea. Just happy that she is growing steadily. Towards the end of the week I did a bit of defoliation and tucked the trimmings under the mulch cover. The runt of the twin seedlings which sprouted early in the week seems to have some funky growth (first set of serrated leaves), but she's looking healthy! Hopefully she grows out of it. Plan to start foliar feeding next week. Don't frack this up Ensign! [START OF WEEK 08] ========================================================== WEEK 08 - Veg 3 WEEK 01 - Seedling [Pre-Veg] WEEK 00b - Germination โ†’ Seedling [Pre-Veg] 11/07/22 โ†’ 11/13/22 This Week's Estimated Goals ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- DLI: 12-14 mol/m2/d PPFD: 185-216 ฮผmol/m2/s VPD: 0.8-1.1 kPa This Week's Meter Readings & Averages ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- DLI: 13.74 mol/m2/d PPFD: 212 ฮผmol/m2/s VPD: 0.84 kPa ========================================================== Day 01 - Monday - 11/07/22 - Total Days: 054 [009] [005] ----------------------------------- Daily Averages - Temps: 77.3ยฐF [23.2ยฐC] - Humidity: 77.0% - VPD: 0.72 kPa ----------------------------------- - [09:33]: Morning checkup! --- Aye look good! --- The main grow is starting to perk up! Growth damage has seemed to have stopped. --- Just incredible! These plants are resilient. --- The new seedling is still growing along but looks a bit yellow and lanky. --- Checked on the new seeds! --- Nice! --- Can see a bit poking out of each! --- Ooowee! - [21:28]: Evening checkup! --- Wow! --- Main girl is looking like a champ! --- Checked on the seedling and she was looking larger, but still a bit yellow. --- She's been also a bit wobbly, so going to fill in a bit of soil to help support her base a bit more. - [21:32]: Gently mounded a tbsp of dried BAS Light soil. --- Patted and secured the base of seedling. --- Also covered the soil with about 2tbps of dried BAS rice hulls. --- Gently misted the seedling and top soil with a bit of distilled water. --- Covered her with dome. This time vents fully open. - [21:40]: Checked on the new seeds and woah! --- Twins! Both have sprouted just above the soil! --- Both had their shells still on. --- Misted each seedling with a bit of distilled water. Then, using a pair of tweezers, I gently removed each shell. --- Great! - [21:46]: Misted the top of each grow bag and humidity domes with distilled water (vents closed). --- They should green up by tomorrow. --- Also refilled the humidifier with distilled water and Hydrogen Peroxide (~20mL). Day 02 - Tuesday - 11/08/22 - Total Days: 055 [010] [006] ----------------------------------- Daily Averages - Temps: 77.9ยฐF [25.5ยฐC] - Humidity: 77.4% - VPD: 0.73 kPa ----------------------------------- - [09:22]: Morning check! --- Good morning ladies! --- Looking good girl! The main grow has just perked up and is just reaching for the light. Very nice! --- Opps! --- Checked on one of the newly sprouted twins and there was a slight issue. --- I guess I didn't fully remove the shell of one of the seedlings (damnit Ensign). --- Apparently, some of the seed's membrane was clamping the cotyledons shut. She was sticking straight up trying to get some light (Shaka, when the walls fell). --- Misted her with a bit of distilled water. --- Then using tweezers, I gently removed the rest of the membrane to reveal a set of healthy green leaves! --- Nice! --- The other twin was already fully sprouted and she was looking green and healthy! --- Gave each seedling a quick misting of distilled water before covering with a dry humidity dome. Vents fully open. --- Sleep well my ladies! --- Opps! --- It's been a while, gotta check on my wormies! - [10:43]: Checked the worm bin. --- Wow, it's been 26 days since the last worm bin checkup and feeding. --- Oops. --- Okay! --- Woah. The soil level is noticeably lower since the last checkup. --- Temporarily removed the mango seed (yea, it's still there). --- Gave the bin a quick mix. --- Wow! The bin was full of worms! Nice! --- Also the texture felt a lot more compacted and slightly muddy. --- Worms have clearly processed a lot of the coco. --- Anyways, made a hole in the center of the bin. --- Okay my wormies, time for another feeding! - [10:55]: This feeding was actually quite large. Had a menagerie of veggies and fruits to fed. Also bokashi grain. --- Okay! --- To line the hole, I layered some cabbage leaves. --- Then placed chunks of frozen watermelon rind. --- Sprinkled 1tbsp of Kashi Blend --- Added chunks of cabbage (center stalk), frozen strawberries, and banana. --- Sprinkled 1tbsp of Kashi Blend onto the entire pile. Then sprinkled another 1tbsp onto the surrounding top soil. --- Topped the food pile with some spinach and cabbage leaves. --- I then placed the mango seed on top and mounded the soil to cover the entire pile. --- Afterwards I top dressed with some shredded brown paper along with a fresh top sheet. --- I did not spray the top. - [11:22]: Cleaned the lid before sealing the bin. --- Done! --- Next check up will hopefully be sooner, but until then, they have plenty of food! --- Also most likely will add more fresh soil or coco to replace the lost substrate. - [16:03]: Evening checkup! --- Wow the main girl is looking pretty good! --- She looks a bit lime green, but just happy that the yellow growth has stopped. --- Paranoid about watering again. Really don't want to stunt her any further. Will continue to only top mist. --- Checked each seedling and they were all looking pretty good! --- Misted each with distilled water before covering again with the humidity dome (vents fully open). --- Plan to inoculate each plant with some beauveria bassiana later tonight. - [18:46]: Night checkup! --- Hmm. Noticed that the grow light could be a bit more centered. --- Added a ratchet rope to reposition the grow light a bit more to the right (making it centered above both EarthBoxes). --- Perfect! - [18:59]: Okay! Time to inoculate each plant with a bit of beauveria bassiana fungi. --- Sprinkled 1/16tsp around the base of the main grow plant. --- Sprinkled 1/32tsp around the base of each seedling (3 seedlings were inoculated). --- Misted the base of each plant with a bit of distilled water. This was just enough water to saturate the powder into the mulch and top soil a bit (~10 sprays for the main girl, ~5 sprays for each seedling). --- Gave each grow bag another round of misting around the edges. --- Then covered each seedling with their dry humidity domes (vents fully open). --- Hmm. --- Not sure, but I think I can smell some terpenes in the air! --- Gave her a quick stem rub. --- Ooo, she smells gassy and loud! Hyped about these diesel genetics! --- As the flowering weeks get closer, may need to attach the carbon filter to help control the terpene aromas. - [19:16] Looking at her top growth, I think I can see some hairs. --- Has she started to transition into flower? Day 03 - Wednesday - 11/09/22 - Total Days: 056 [011] [007] ----------------------------------- Daily Averages - Temps: 77.6ยฐF [25.3ยฐC] - Humidity: 75.5% - VPD: 0.75 kPa ----------------------------------- - [09:31]: Quick morning checkup! --- Girls are looking pretty good! --- Hmm. All but one of the seedlings are looking good. --- One of the twin seedlings (the one that still had the membrane on) has yet to grow out her first set of leaves. If no growth happens by the end of the week, may have to start another seed soak (Shaka, when the walls fell). --- I hope she survives! - [21:35]: Evening checkup! --- Hello my ladies! --- Looking good! --- Everyone is growing along! Even the runt is starting to show signs of top growth. Nice! --- Misted the base of the main plant along with the top of each seedling with a bit of distilled water. --- Then placed the humidity domes back onto each seedling. Vents fully open. --- Lastly refilled the humidifier with more distilled water and Hydrogen Peroxide (~20mL) --- Easy night! --- Plan to do a bit of low-stress training (LST) tomorrow. My goal is to gently bend the main stalk over to lower the height of the main plant. --- This will hopefully help to bush her out a bit to make up for the loss of veg growth. --- Still have not watered anything down the reservoir. Day 04 - Thursday - 11/10/22 - Total Days: 057 [012] [008] ----------------------------------- Daily Averages - Temps: 76.3ยฐF [24.6 ยฐC] - Humidity: 73.5% - VPD: 0.81 kPa ----------------------------------- - [09:36]: Quick morning checkup! --- Aye nice! She is looking nice and perky! --- All the seedlings are also looking nice and healthy! --- Did not mist any water. Just placed the dried domes back on. --- Plan to low-stress train tonight! - [16:16]: Evening checkup! --- Everyone is looking nice and perky! --- Great! --- Rotated the EarthBoxes to check on the main grow. --- Checked under the mulch cover to find the leaves decomposing nicely! --- Checked the moisture levels and the meter was (still) off the charts. --- I haven't watered in weeks. --- Why was the moisture still so high? --- Anyways, --- Time for some LST! - [16:22]: Going to bend her closer to one side of the EarthBox. --- This should open up the canopy a bit to allow more lower growth to fill in the canopy. --- Re-placed the mulch cover and gave the top growth a quick misting of distilled water. --- While the water soaks in, --- Refilled the humidifier with distilled water and a bit of Hydrogen Peroxide (~20mL). --- Okay! - [16:28]: Using a garden yo-yo and binder clip, I gently bent her over. --- I carefully attached the hook end of the yo-yo near the top and the ratchet end onto the side of the EarthBox (the side nearest the fill tube). --- Once everything was connected, I gently tightened the tension on the yo-yo. This created a gentle bend. --- Gave the top growth another misting of distilled water. --- Done! - [16:37]: Gave each seedling a slight misting of distilled water. --- Then covered each seedling with their humidity domes (vents open). --- Rotated the EarthBoxes back to the default configuration. --- Will check on the main grow to see how she reacts to the LST. --- Really hope I didn't screw this up. - [18:15]: Quick check! --- Wow! The main grow has already reshaped herself to the new bend. --- Her top is already perking upwards! --- These plants are just incredible! --- Misted the top growth again with more distilled water. Day 05 - Friday - 11/11/22 - Total Days: 058 [013] [009] ----------------------------------- Daily Averages - Temps: 76.9ยฐF [24.9ยฐC] - Humidity: 67.6% - VPD: 1.00 kPa ----------------------------------- --- [Skipped the morning checkup] - [22:21]: Night check! --- Wow the main grow is looking bushier! --- There are a few yellowing leaves, but will defoliate those tomorrow. --- Seedlings all look great! --- Even the runt is growing larger! --- Gave each seedling a misting of water. --- Then placed their dry humidity domes back on (vents fully open). --- Refilled the humidifier with distilled water along with a bit of Hydrogen Peroxide (~20mL). Day 06 - Saturday - 11/12/22 - Total Days: 059 [014] [010] ----------------------------------- Daily Averages - Temps: 76.8ยฐF [24.9ยฐC] - Humidity: 69.1% - VPD: 0.96 kPa ----------------------------------- - [06:44]: Quick morning checkup! --- Everyone is growing along nicely! --- The main grow is showing some signs of stress. A set of leaves is starting to yellow. --- Plan to defoliate tonight. --- On the flip-side, the seedlings are looking great! --- Did not mist any of the seedlings. Just placed the dried domes back on with the vents fully open. - [20:21]: Evening checkup! --- Looking good girls! --- Rotated the EarthBoxes. --- Wow growth is really starting to adapt to bend! --- Okay! - [20:23]: Time for a bit of defoliation! --- To clean up the canopy, using a set of trimmers, I carefully snipped off a few damaged leaves. --- Looking a lot better! - [20:29]: Took height reading. --- Wow! Even with the bend, she was just around 13" tall! --- The distance between the light and top canopy was around 20" - [20:34]: Tucked the trimmed leaves under the mulch cover. --- Rotated the EarthBoxes back to the default configuration. --- Checked on the seedlings and everyone is looking very healthy! --- Gently misted a bit of distilled water around the seedling in the main EarthBox. --- Misted the top soil of the new EarthBox (~1 cup). Then slightly misted each grow bag. --- Re-covered each seedling with their dry humidity domes (vents open). --- Refilled the humidifier with distilled water and Hydrogen Peroxide (~20mL). Day 07 - Sunday - 11/13/22 - Total Days: 060 [015] [011] ----------------------------------- Daily Averages - Temps: 76.5ยฐF [24.7ยฐC] - Humidity: 72.8% - VPD: 0.84 kPa ----------------------------------- - [07:31]: Quick morning checkup! --- Everyone is looking great! --- Did not mist anything. --- Re-covered each seedling with their humidity dome. Vents fully open. - [21:20]: Evening checkup! --- Top growth on the main grow is looking a bit wonky, but is starting to fill in. --- Seedlings all look nice and healthy! --- Misted some distilled water around the grow bag for the seedling in the main EarthBox. --- Also misted the twins in the new EarthBox with distilled water. --- Then re-covered each seedling with their dry humidity domes (vents open). --- Refilled the humidifier with distilled water and Hydrogen Peroxide (~20mL). --- Well this week went quite smoothly! --- There was a bit of stress on the main grow, but she seems to be recovering from the LST. --- Plan to foliar feed next week. @Dirty_Hippy, Siiick!! Now I'm no expert but feel free to follow along growmie! I try to post weekly! I'm still learning how to grow in it, but have so far enjoyed using the EarthBox. I recommend checking out the BuildASoil YT channel if you really want great free info on organic growing in the EarthBox.
